Women in Business Networking: How to Build a Network of Reciprocity in Business
We often hear expressions like it’s whom you know, or the gold is in the network, but what does it mean to have a dynamic network of like-minded business owners who are readily available to receive and refer?
Women in business networking can feel challenging and intimidating, especially for introverts, but any business owner will tell you that you can’t build a successful business on your own. Networking is essential. So how do you build a network that is ready to give and receive?
Making connections in an online world may feel challenging, but it doesn’t need to be complicated.
Why women in business networking?
There is something special about women supporting other women in business; however, I would never recommend limiting yourself to only women in your network. Everyone offers value, and having both men and women to reach out to in your network is valuable.
How to connect online and in-person
It takes courage to go to networking events. Some people love it; some people don’t. It’s been my experience that most people don’t. To network, you need to make yourself vulnerable, and it can feel like high school all over again.
The key to building networks is to put yourself in situations that expose you to people you would like to do business with. With the world going virtual during the pandemic, some may have found networking events more difficult, while others may have thrived through the virtual events.
Networking groups, volunteering at business conferences, joining boards, and networking events are great for exposure. You want to strike up a conversation with someone and get them talking about things that interest them. You can talk to anyone you meet anywhere—churches, banquets, sporting events, even on vacation. You never know when you’ll encounter an excellent contact.
It still needs to be genuine. Networking can be aligned to forming a new business friendship – some people you click with. When you find people you connect with, you can build on those relationships and offer value.
How to build meaningful business relationships
Lead with value. Be genuine about it when you meet someone you feel would be great to have in your network. Authenticity gets you much further in life, as does kindness. People in higher positions are accustomed to being approached by others who need something from them, so when you see the potential contact as a person and want to build a meaningful relationship, be sure you come across as such.
It may take time to build these relationships that you want, so be ready to put in the effort. You can start by supporting them in their work. Social media is a great way to build relationships and support their work. They will get to know your name as they see you commenting and sharing their content.
Build your network before you need it
Building your network before you need it is critical. You can’t just appear at people’s doorsteps asking for things from them. Offer value with no expectation of return. When you show people that you are interested in what they do and want to help them get their work out there, most will value that and want to reciprocate somehow.
Be wary of one-sided relationships, though. Having a taker in your network is not mutually beneficial. Surround yourself with those who lift you as you lift them. Business takes a community, and intelligent business owners recognize this.
The bottom line is don’t hesitate to reach out and connect with others. Bring value to the relationship and don’t just take from others. It feels good to give to help others and trust the process that what comes around goes around.
